Discount Calculator

Apply a discount, find the discount %, combine two discounts, or check if you'll still make profit after offering a discount โ€” all in one tool.

Most common: "MRP โ‚น500, give 20% off โ†’ final price?"

Reverse: "MRP โ‚น500, selling at โ‚น400 โ€” what % discount is that?"

"Flat 20% off + Extra 10% off" โ€” second discount is on the already-discounted price. NOT 30% total.

"My cost โ‚น300, MRP โ‚น500, planning 20% off โ€” am I still in profit?"

Mode 1 โ€” Apply a Discount (MRP โ†’ Final Price)

The everyday calculation: you have an MRP and you're giving a percentage off, what's the final price? Example: Soap MRP โ‚น100, 15% off โ†’ discount โ‚น15, customer pays โ‚น85.

Mode 2 โ€” Find the Discount Percentage

You see "MRP โ‚น500, sale price โ‚น350" on a tag โ€” what discount is that actually? Formula: (โ‚น500 โˆ’ โ‚น350) รท โ‚น500 ร— 100 = 30% off. Useful for comparing offers and for setting your own discounts to a clean round number.

Mode 3 โ€” Combined Discounts (the trap)

Important: "Flat 20% + Extra 10%" is NOT a 30% discount. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, not the original.

Example: MRP โ‚น500. Flat 20% โ†’ โ‚น400. Extra 10% on โ‚น400 โ†’ โ‚น360. Total saving = โ‚น140. Effective discount = 28%, not 30%.

This catches a lot of customers off-guard. As a shop owner, knowing the real combined discount helps you price honestly and avoid surprises at checkout.

Mode 4 โ€” Will My Discount Still Be Profitable?

The most important check before you announce an offer. Enter your cost, the MRP, and the discount you plan to give โ€” the tool tells you whether you're still in profit, breaking even, or selling at a loss.

Example: You buy a packet of cookies for โ‚น40, MRP is โ‚น60. You announce 25% off โ†’ selling price becomes โ‚น45. Profit = โ‚น5 per packet (still profitable, ~12.5% markup). But if you announce 35% off โ†’ selling price โ‚น39, you make a โ‚น1 loss per packet. This tool flags that before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between discount and markdown?

Same thing for retail. "Discount" is more common in India; "markdown" is the global retail term. Both mean: lower the price from MRP.

Are MRP discounts allowed in India?

Yes โ€” selling below MRP is legal and standard. Selling ABOVE MRP is illegal under the Legal Metrology Act. Discounts on MRP are how most kirana and retail shops operate.

How do I calculate discount + GST together?

Apply discount first, then GST on the discounted amount. Use this tool for the discount, then our GST Calculator for the tax.

What's a sensible discount range for kirana shops?

2โ€“10% for everyday FMCG, 10โ€“20% for festival offers, 20โ€“30% for clearance/expiring stock. Anything over 30% should be checked with the Profit mode of this tool.
